Laura,

I found this letter in an old chest with some pictures of your mother and father when they first met. I found many other letters that they wrote to one another, but I thought this one was special. It may answer some of the questions you have been asking over the years. There are other letters, and if you would like I can send them to you. Let me know. I wasn’t sure if I should send this one, but a little voice inside told me yes.

“Tutu?”

“Yes, that’s what I call her. It’s Hawaiian for ‘grandmother.’ She felt she was much too young to be called Grandma when I was born, so she always asked me to call her that instead; but she’ll always be my grammy.” Laura unfolded the yellow piece of writing paper and looked at the scrolls, dips, and curves, but she was unable to read anything. It was written in cursive.

Laura turned to her roommates, “Can anyone read cursive?” They all shook their heads. She hollered to Hope, “Excuse me! Do you know how to read cursive?”

Hope turned to face them. “Yes, I can. Why do you ask?”

“I have a letter here I need some help with. Would you mind reading it to me?”

“I would be happy to read it for you,” she said as she rejoined the group. Laura handed her the faded sheet of notepaper, and Hope began to read, “My dearest Allison—”

“Allison was my mom,” Laura told her friends.
